Privacy Policy for AstroSky
Effective October 13, 2026
AstroSky is a free iPhone app from Polaris View. This page describes what the app does with information. It matches the App Store privacy label: location is used for app functionality, is not linked to your identity, and is not used for tracking.
Who we are
AstroSky is developed by Polaris View. Questions about this policy: support@polarisview.com.
No account
There is no sign-in and no profile. Polaris View does not hold your sites, forecasts, or settings on a server of our own. The phone requests forecasts directly and keeps them on the device.
Location
Location is when-in-use only. The app uses it to add your current place as an observing site and to forecast the sky there. You can search for a place or type coordinates instead of using location.
You can turn location off in iOS Settings. Saved sites can be deleted in the app. Before coordinates leave the phone, they are rounded to about 0.01° (about 1 km). Precise location is not sent off the device.
What leaves the device, and who receives it
Open-Meteo
The app sends coarsened latitude and longitude to api.open-meteo.com and air-quality-api.open-meteo.com to return an 8-day weather forecast and about 5 days of aerosol and dust data. No API key is sent. Open-Meteo’s privacy policy: open-meteo.com/en/terms.
Apple
Current location, reverse geocoding of that location into a place name, and place search (MKLocalSearch) are handled by Apple, not by Polaris View. Apple’s privacy policy: apple.com/legal/privacy.
What stays on the phone
The app stores, on this device only:
- Saved sites (name, place line, coordinates, and Bortle class)
- The selected site
- Alert and rig settings
- A forecast cache
Settings and sites are in UserDefaults. The forecast cache is in the app’s cache folder and can be removed by iOS. Deleting the app deletes this data.
Notifications
Alerts are optional and local only. They are scheduled on the device from the latest forecast. They are not sent through a Polaris View server. You can deny notifications or turn them off in Settings.
Background refresh
iOS may refresh the forecast and reschedule alerts while the app is not open. That uses the same coarsened coordinates and the same Open-Meteo requests described above.
What we do not do
- No ads
- No tracking
- No analytics SDK
- No sale of data
- No linking location to an identity
- No precise location sent off the device
Children
AstroSky is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children.
Retention and deletion
Polaris View does not retain a copy of your sites, forecasts, or location. Open-Meteo and Apple process the requests they receive under their own policies.
Delete a site inside the app. Delete everything the app stores by deleting AstroSky from your iPhone.
Changes
